Why do you think people are gay?

Just curious as to what you think about why some people are homosexual and others aren't. Give your honest opinion in the comments I want to hear from as many people who think it's natural as those who think it's unnatural and if you believe something else I really want to know what you think.

It's genetic 22
It's enviromental 14
It's a choice 10
It's a mix of enviromental and genetic factors 32
I don't know 3
I believe it's something other than what is listed 9
It's different for gay guys and lesbian women as to why they're gay 4

I would assume my best guess would be its more biological...you are born that way.
but I dont think anyone knows 100%
It could be a mix of a whole host of factors.

      I agree with this answer.
One thing is the majority of gay people claim they didn't choose to be gay, which I believe (since being gay makes life harder why would anyone choose it?) I even know a few gay people who tried various ways to become UN-gay and guess what? Didn't work. lol

I think people are gay because they are not heterosexual. That's why they are gay.

Why are people straight? Or bi? No-one really knows, people just are what they are. Why is the wrong question.

I don't know why people are attracted to the people they are, and as far as I know no-one does. The best I can say is "it's a combination of factors".

I think it's that they like dick that gives it away. Oh, you mean the cause. There have been a lot of recent discoveries that would indicate homosexuality is primarily a result of one's biology. A study of the size of the interstitial nucleus of the anterior hypothalamus of autopsied men showed to be different sizes depending on their sexual preference. Some dude tried to refute that shit and I honestly haven't read up on his findings to know whether it's been falsified. I think it's nearly universally accepted now that homosexuality is genetically influenced. Also hormones, birth order, and environment are said to play a role. Anyway, I think it's safe to say that it's mostly just something you're born with.

It may surprise you to know that the term "gay" doesn't just refer to men and as far as I know no-one has bothered to check any of the brains of lesbians for such similarities.

If they'd been observing mine, would they have noticed any brai changes from het to bi to het to bi to lesbian to bi to pansexual? I think not ....

What's more, given what's now being discovered about neuroplasticity, maybe the differences in the gay men's brains were CAUSED by their sexuality and the other way around?

And having said all that, who gives a stuff anyway?

I believe most gay guys are born gay.
I believe many women turn to women lovers because of bad experiences with men, though there are certainly women born who are only attracted to women, too.

Because they are exposed to higher amounts of hormones such as estrogen for male fetuses and testosterone for female fetuses. It's a fairly random event which results from a unique combination of genetic conditions and maternal physical health at the time. Due to feminization for males or masculinization for females, the sexual characteristics of the opposite sex are inherited by the individual.

That's an oversimplified version of it anyway. I'd throw out possible evolutionary explanations but my phone's gonna die.

So how then would you explain me? Mainly het but slightly bi as a teenager; het for 5 or 6 years & enjoyed it; bi for a year or so and then exclusively lesbian for nearly 30 years; then bi; then het; now describe myself as pansexual.

Sexuality isn't nearly as solid as people may like to believe. Developing brain + changing hormones = changes in sexual preference. Your brain never stops changing.

Totally agree, that's why I like the term pansexual because it isn't a restricting label like all the others can be: to quote someone I heard on the radio the other day and whose name I've forgotten: I claim the right to be whoever I want to be when I wake up every morning and the right for whoever that is to be accepted by others .....

I think it was better expressed than that, but words to that effect

Im not saying this is true for you but there is evidence that women develop more lesbian tendencies when certain male hormones increase in the body through nature or synthetic hormones. Just saying.

            • Ellenna

That may be so, but if there is such "evidence" please give a reference so we can check it out.

The proportion of male hormones to female increases naturally at menopause but as far as I know there aren't millions of lifelong het women who become lesbian in their 50's and 60's - in fact, in my own case, it was totally the other way round.

What do you mean by "lesbian tendencies" anyway?

Why are some people musically or artistically gifted and others not?

Why are some people left handed?

    Who cares?

I'm wary of people searching for reasons for "gayness" because that search is all too often linked to searching for ways to prevent or eradicate it and this will never happen.

While I think it is natural, and for many people a combinations of factors come in play, I wouldn't be at all surprised if research never connected it genetically.

I think people are born with either opposite sex, same sex or attraction to both sexes. Sometimes environment and life experiences may nudge people one way or the other.

I have quite a few friends who are lesbian now, who were previously in hetero relationships. Most of them have had bad experiences with guys, so they went and batted for the other side.

I personally don' think it's useful for people to try and change their sexual orientation or that of others.

Well, there are very stupid norms in society like gay men have high voices and embrace their fashion side....and lesbian women are more like boys(gender standard which is stupid) They don't realize...that these are stupid standards and things which stupid people just assume..

    • Because I'm gay so I'm mostly asking for myself because I feel their should be a reason. I asked the same about lesbians but no one really seemed interested in answering the question. I want to know because being like this bothers me but I don't feel I can do anything about so all I can do is understand.

I think I've said this before somewhere, but the most interesting theory I've heard is that it's got something to do with the antibodies in the womb affecting the fetus. They say it is even more significant when the mother has already given birth to quite a few sons and that then there is a build of these antibodies. If this is the case, it would explain why it is hard/impossible to locate a gay gene.
