Why hema dosen't have the same level of popularity as fencing?

I mean, they both can be resumed as a sport where you fight with a sword(or replicate a duel). I think that HEMA has the potential to be an excellent sport, even a for the Olympics, but for some reason, is not as popular as fencing. I personally would love to learn Historical European Martial Arts, as I think is fun, constructive, and an important part of European culture, but in my country, this sport is not popular. Comparable, we have 4 different fencing clubs in town. I'm open to hearing your opinions.

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

  • Same reason we don’t use european torture devices either. Good at the time, but out dated.

Good point. But in that case, fencing is also outdated. And spear throw is outdated. If you look from a simplistic perspective, fencing and hema are both based on swordplay and weapon techniques.

Fencing is looked more as the romantic renaissance fighting style.

I also love HEMA and I want to join a HEMA club, but there is barely one in my COUNTRY! FUCK!
    But anyway...
I think it's because fencing it's been around for more time. By that I mean that HEMA has we know are relatively recent and is gaining popularity on the Internet. Perhaps in a few years we start to see world championships of HEMA
