Why/ how has the american educational system failed?

How has the US screwed up so much that we have tought our youth that cheating or bribing people is more valuable than learning the right way?

I admit whole heartily that I cheated on my exams and tests starting from middle school all the way to the end of college, and I never ever got cought once. I had legit accomodations so I got extended time and learnd that there were loopholes in the system. I found that after a certain point, my brain could not cram anymore information possible and I was not retaining the information. So instead of failing, I cheated.

It is important to note that I actively took part in 90% of all classes I ever took. I wanted to learn, just hated memorizing for tests.

America spends way too much money on the military which would leave less over for education, maybe that's why.

What schools do is prepare us for the world of work. Things like doing pointless tasks, having all these layers of people (useless chain of command), forbidding any form of enjoyment while you are there, expected to be robots basically, dress codes, and of course the ass kissers get special recognition.

What school does NOT do is prepare one for a good career nor does it prepare anyone for the real world. Instead of teaching useless shit like trig or calculus, why not have classes about balancing a budget, checking account, etc? Instead of requiring gym, why not driver's ed? IMO that is probably the single most important thing we should be teaching our kids in and out of school - how to be safe drivers. At one point there was driver's ed in schools.

I think course on how to live on one's own would be a lot more important and interesting that sitting through some god damn literature class studying The Great Cuntsby.

TLDR - they spend more time teaching bullshit rather than things kids will actually need once they hit the real world.

You want to know the real funny part though? Back in school, we had this delusion that when we were adults and going to work, we would get treated as grown-ups. Boy were we wrong.

Like you go to work each day and know EXACTLY what needs to happen yet the supervisor feels the need to remind everyone what to do.

    • I had drivers ed. It was required to graduate... The system is no longer valid as these methods were used to pump out factory workers during the industrial era. Now a days its more or less kept the same to keep the masses dumb and miserable.

How long ago was that though? My brother had driver's ed but that was in the late 70's. I think it was optional in the early 90's when I was in high school but the price was like $500.

Also, this is in the US, is that where you are?

        • I took drivers ed in 2012. The driving portion was designed to be much tougher than at the dmv, so if you passed the driving test in school, you were exempt from taking it again at the dmv.

Not too many students passed the class driving test as the teachers really wanted to make sure you were a safe and ready driver.

I agree OP. Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, Common Sense, Manners, Social Skills, Financial Management, Handling rejection, Applying for Employment, automobile repair to name a few. Essential living skills that will be used lifelong.
Why in God's name we need to learn trivial high mathematics or fictional stories that have no realistic use is beyond me. Some things need to be phased out as they are obsolete. Saying sports teaches teamwork is pure nonsense.
Group work, teamwork and partner work only works in specific scenarios not everything in the world requires collaboration. Most of this is from teachers wanting to grade less and not focus on individuals.

Media doesn't make fake trump puppets saying the things he does. He says them. He tweets them. Just because it's in the internet doesn't mean it's fake news.

"Trump said mean things". We know Trump says mean things. He's president though. If you disagree with his policies that hes looking to implement on then speak on that but just saying "He says mean things" doesnt matter to us Americans when he's cut our taxes in half, helped our economy, and kept us out of conflict with other countries.

He can say mean things all he wants. I didnt vote for him because I like him I voted for him because he had the best plan.

Many things mentioned about teaching kids useful life skills is supposed to be taught by parents. So schools have to pretend they're teaching culture for all Americans to agree on some useless shit they were forced to go thru for 10 years of their lives. School was a means to understand other humans but mostly to go thru destructive atrocities by the social environment of fukt up behavior by adolescents and totally crush 90% of children's self esteem or allow the 10% to hold a false sense of pride.
All in all, it's a daycare center filled with confusing round and round bullshit to keep kids busy until they've completed puberty and inevitably help out in the work industry without human problems.
If you aren't worried about getting accepted into a college, then you should allow your kids to hangout at school for friends and dismiss the home work and bs taught (or at least maintain a D to not get held back), and actually teach them useful shit yourself and get them involved in work and in life by age 12 to begin building their own characteristics and real life skills and interests.
Live for real, and become an individual.

Unions are kinda ripping up the funding for the schools. Teachers who want job security are sucking the funding of these schools dry.

Your literacy rates are shockingly low for a first world country. In fact I'm pretty sure it's still the lowest literacy rate of any first world country, but I can't be bothered googling so please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong there. Either way, I know it's bad.

I'm not sure how that happens. I would imagine part of it is simply the fact that the country is so big, and state by state will be quite diverse educationally. So there's no one size fits all.

However you also need to consider that your space program has been unparalleled for over half a century (although the Japanese look close to catching up now, judging off the last couple of years) which involves being good at a multitude of complex things including theoretical physics, robotics, biochemistry, geology, aerospace engineering etc. You also have contributed very impressively to modern medical advancements. I don't believe that you are world leaders but still comfortably up there with the best on a long-term basis. I list these two examples because I happen to know quite a lot about these industries, but I imagine that there will be a whole host of other scientific fields in which you make great contributions. You dominate a lot of these kinds of industries. So... one has to conclude that your education system is doing an excellent job, at least some of the time, surely?

    • Sometimes I feel like the educational system has just failed me (or mentally disabled people like me) because the system is cookie cutter and most often, I fell behind because If I didn't understand something, none of my teachers were really willing to help me catch up.

I'm really sorry to hear that. It always makes me sad when someone feels that their school system has failed them. It's the one thing in life that everyone deserves a fair crack at, and sadly not everyone gets it.

Is there anything that you can do about it now? Are you still at school or have you finished? There's usually adult education routes available for those who are willing, but it isn't easy.

        • I graduated college last may. I have a job currently within the field I majored in. I am super thankful that I didnt fuck it up along the way... I am what they classify as a “high functioning autistic person” it really just takes my brain twice as long to comprehend certain subjects like math or english

College was actually easier than any of the classes I had in high school.

I think people take advantage of the opportunities they can. Or they don't. Personally, I'm housepoor so my kids can go the the best schools. Will they still learn how to manage nonexistent numbers? Yes. Will they learn how to feed themselves? No. Do they learn how to drive? Nope. As a parent, I balance those things so my kids can learn life skills and not just how to take a test.

    • I agree that it is the parents job to do those things, but I also think that our educational system should reinforce it as well. What is the purpose of a school if not to teach us how to be adults?
