Why is it carl's jr. west of missouri and hardee's east of missouri?

I used to live on the west coast and moved to Florida for a few years. I noticed that once you reach Missouri, Carl's Jr. restaurants slowly transition into Hardee's. Both restaurants are virtually identical in terms of their menu and even the creepy smiling face in the logo

What's the point of calling the same fast food franchise by two different names depending on region?

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

I used to wonder something similar about Checkers and Rallys.

Hardee's is the name of an old eastern fast food chain. Carl's Jr. is the name of an old western fast food chain. One day, Carl's Jr. bought Hardee's. Carl's Jr decided not to rename the restaurants, probably in part for name recognition and possibly out of respect for the old restaurants. However, they did switch Hardee's to the Carl's Jr. logo.

Apparently, they actually don't have the exact same menu. Carl's Jr. (I've been told) has more of the Mexican-y stuff than Hardee's, though Hardee's does have some of it.

        • To be honest the only thing I ever get from Carl's Jr. is the guacamole bacon burger. And I go there like once every 9 months lol
