Why is the godfather so popular?

I watched The Godfather Trilogy when it was released on Netflix and i didn’t really know what to make of them. I didn’t entirely understand the plot, nor could I follow every scene (this was only my first time watching) and I don’t need constant action and explosions to keep me interested but the action scenes were the most memorable IMHO. Also everyone seems to really hate the third one but I thought it was roughly on the same level as the first two. This may be one of those cases where I need to re watch them to fully cement my opinion, because I didn’t hate these movies, but I couldn’t quite tell why the first two were on AFI’s 100 Greatest Films list (with the first one as high as #2!) and why so many people think of them as one of If not THE best movies ever!

    Al Pacino, Marlon Brando, Robert Deniro. It's those actors and the point being the Godfather isn't about a particular plot but about the characters, culture, and time it represents.

    As a guy from the waste management business, i'm gonna try to spill this from a "movie go-er" perspective, just so I don't get in trouble. I don't wanna end up like my Uncle Freddy back in 86'.

    The Godfather doesn't necessarily rely on a single plot per say, but it primarily focuses on the struggles and lifestyles of the mob. More specifically, the higher-ups like the Dons, the Consiglieres, and the rest of "The Commission". What makes the Godfather stand out as a Crime movie is the fact that there isn't any of that stereotypical Hollywood-Action bullshit. And when I say "bullshit", I mean overly macho protagonists spraying everywhere and getting lipped at the end.

    The portrayal of the mob never gets as high as The Godfather. However, that's not to say that some of us prefer a few other Gangster flicks. I personally prefer "The Goodfellas" over Godfather anyday.

    While Godfather focuses on the Don's point of view, Goodfellas is all about the streets. Much like the Sopranos, which I highly suggest if you want a more modern take of the Italian mob.

    Just so I don't have my head taken away, no more questions.

    The third one sucked because it was an obvious attempt at capitalizing on the popularity of the first two. I like the the first two. My only complaint is that I've seen them too many times already.
