They don't have true American-style free speech. A good comparison would be 4Chan. They also have true American-style free speech.

I think most social media including facebook had pretty good freespeech values before 2016. You could even find isis recruitment pages on there and they werent removed. People would openly talk about murdering politicians. And even then it wasnt anywhere near as weird as 4chan. I think 4chan is just a place for crazy people where they can be anonymous and be weird. Normal ppl look at 4chan and leave.

But imagine public squares where you had to physically sit down and take turns with your opinions face to face in a group setting. One public square would have people saying their opinions bluntly.
The other public square would have alot of nerdy dudes sitting there too scared to say their opinion because they arent anonymous and they have social anxiety issues.
4chan would be public square #2. Both public squares are American style freespeech but just two different types of people go to them.

While it's the garbage can of what's considered the bare minimum in legality on the internet. I can say with confidence that 4chan is a major contributor to the meme economy of the internet.

The best part of that is we got people from all over the world. So it kinda reinforces the melting pot claim.
Not a lot of censorship, which is mostly driven by user interaction.

We are like Indiana. Fuck all here when compared to other sites but at least you can remember the names of who is here. We are at a convenient crossroads of getting somewhere else probably more important.
We are just the hobos that decided this was our overpass now.

I’d go as far as to say most here are painfully normal going by my “real” observations that I keep to myself.
But then again, the standards for deviance, maladjustment and general kookiness I go by are quite high.
