Will my cat forget i'm her "mommy" bc she no longer lives with me?

My ex and I lived together for two years. We got a kitten when we moved in together. I was the main caretaker, and Shayna (the kitty) and I developed a very close bond. When my ex and I broke up, I couldn't keep her with me, so he took her.

She is in a great home and happy, and I do get to see her once in a while (every couple of months). But despite people telling me Shayna will always remember me, I fear that she will see me as a stranger and not as her "mommy," her owner.

Is this normal, and can a cat continue to remember her owner even if she is now only an occasional presence in her life?

    OP: They absolutely remember people.

Firstly, remember that many animals use scent to identify others - that's why the sniff each others' butts. Secondly, remember that their sense of smell is FAR more powerful than that of a human.

Unless something happens to affect her memory, she will always know exactly who you are.

You were never her mommy because you never gave birth to her.

Your cat will remember you unless, that is, she has serious memory issues. But animals rely on many other methods for recognising their loved ones. Your worry is understandable.

Its ok, she wont forget you. Look up the story about christian the lion. He didnt see them for a year or 2 but when they saw him again he came running all happily.

I had something similar happen. When I went away to college my cat stayed behind to live with my mother. When I was gone the cat slept with my mother but every time I came home to visit the cat would sleep with me and lay near me during the day for as long as I was home. They definitely rememeber at least a little.
