Will the united states ever have an atheist president?

It was a big deal when Obama was elected. It will be a big deal when the first woman president is elected. But neither of them knows what it's like to be discriminated against in American politics as atheists do.

Yes, and pretty soon. 47
Yes, but not in our lifetimes. 54
No, atheism will be made illegal before then. 4
No, the people would never accept it. 57
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

I wouldn't give a damn what the president religious beliefs as long as they can lead the country into the right direction.

I really don't care about the president's religion or lack thereof.

Not to be offensive but if it weren't for people being so headstrong about their religions a lot of lives could have been saved, and our country would probably be in a better position then it is now. I think religion is wonderful to have if it makes people happy but if it clouds their perspective on everything it is only going to hold us back.

I suspect Obama is an atheist, but there is no way he can openly admit it for fear of losing voters.

I am an atheist and have no problem voting for a religious person as long as that person keeps their religion out of their policies.

I think Thomas Jefferson was at least an agnostic. He wasn't too impressed with the bible. We've probably already had presidents that were atheists, but just pretended to believe for PR reasons.

I swear to the gods you don't believe in...if I hear one more atheist bitch about how hard they got it...

Let me put a couple of things in perspective for you:

    1. While atheists have been censored and ostracized throughout history, no atheist has ever been fed to lions or burnt at the stake.

    2. Given that politicians lie profusely, how likely do you think it is that one of our presidents (read: Nixon, Bush Sr., Clinton) was actually an athiest?

    3. Given the choice in spokespeople (read: Richard Dawkins) over others (read: Emma Goldman) don't you think your case would go better coming from a person who wasn't a complete asshole?

Who was bitching? He/she was just asking a normal question which happens to be an interesting topic. Your unprovoked overreaction diminishes your point and makes you look very unreasonable.

      1. How the hell do you know that? You know for a FACT that no Atheist was fed to lions or burnt at the stake? Throughout the whole of HISTORY? I think what you meant to say was "no KNOWN atheist".

      2. The point of this question is that a president would be a KNOWN Atheist president. In other words, everyone knows he's an Atheist and still votes for him, therefore "America" voting for an Atheist.

      3. Is Richard Dawkins the president of Atheists? He's just the most famous one and made a point to bring Atheism and explain its validity to the masses. Would it be fair if I said that Bill O'Reilly and Rush Limbaugh were the Christian representatives?

        3. Yes, it would be fair to say Bill O Riley and Rush Limbaugh were the representatives of Christianity. They'd say so themselves (knowing that their true god is Money)

        2. Sure sure. The day that such an event happens will be the day the American populace looks up and says "Who gives a shit what god you do or don't believe in, fix our economy!" In the interim, I was presenting some information that the OP may not have considered. It's like Lincoln. He didn't "come out of the log cabin closet" but he's still a win for my team...

        1. No KNOWN athiest of WHOM we ambiguously reference herein has ever been fed to lions or been burned at the stake. There, are you happy? Are my I's dotted and my T's crossed? Punctuation in place? Jesus Fucki...(oh, did that offend you? Sorry...Odin Motherfucking Runecaller).

No, you're right Casualcronie. The OP wasn't bitching...that comment was placed just so for future posters that (and there are posts on this website to validate my position) would whine about how Atheists are such an oppressed minority.

Minor point...during the 2008 Presidential Election, Current President Obama neither confirmed nor denied his personal religious convictions. In deed, he went to churches, quoted from the Quran and the Torah, and employed a number of pandering tactics to soothe the minds of the masses. On the extremist right, there was a lot of name-calling and accusations of his "muslim heritage". On the extremist left there was a complete dismissal of his religious affiliation in favor of simply "getting one of our guys in there". I submit that this was, at least in part, the first election not based in religion.

        • casualcrow

Yea ok, I'm not really uptight with these comments but if you're going to make a general statement like that fist one, you have to be specific, that's all I was saying. Saying "no atheist has ever been" makes it sound as if you know for a fact, which you don't. And if you're trying to prove a point, isn't using real facts that way to do that?

And I don't doubt that religion didn't play that big a part in the previous election. Maybe some presidents were secretly atheist in the past, the point is the rest of us didn't know which therefore has no effect either way.

My main point was to just ask why you were being so obviously emotional in your first comment, but you cleared that up.

Also, saying Jesus Christ doesn't offend me and I don't think it offends most Atheists. Most Atheists I know don't care about these controversial issues. We know that most of society is dead-set in its ways and most likely wont change. Say Merry Christmas all you want, doesn't bother me.

I HAVE to be specific? I don't HAVE to do anything but die. This whole site is a 4chan disguised as a means of giving advice. Sure, we sneak the truth in there every now and again, but who wants the whole truth? Bloodletting has come a long way, from the gladiatorial arena to the interwebz. I am simply Meridius to the Commoduses of the world (or is it Commodi?)

Emotional? Yes, I suppose disgust is an emotion.

Well, to set the record straight: Nixon-> Clinton= (not so) Closet Athiests.

Again your point like a flaccid penis, is useless and exhausted. No matter who was a closet atheist, the PUBLIC DID NOT KNOW about it.

That's like saying the Pope is actually an atheist. Are the people going to believe that? NO!
Everybody believed Clinton and Nixon were Christians, that's what mattered.

Question was: will the U.S have an atheist president?
NOT will the U.S have a closet-atheist president who tells everyone he's christian but really isn't?

franks red hot....i put that shit on everything.

Atheism is kind of ridiculous. I mean, by all means people should believe in what ever they want and if the president is athiest then that is his own decision it shouldnt matter to the people. Religion and government should be seperate but THEY ARENT. Politicians are a bunch of lying, bullshitters who attend meetings at the bohemian grove, skull and bones, illuminati bilderberg shit!
