Woman feeds her dog chocolate

I was taking with a coworker about our pets, at some point she mentioned that she regularly gives her dog chocolate for a treat. I told her I think chocolate is pretty toxic to most pets and probably very bad for the dog. She says shes been doing it a while and it "doesn't seem to hurt".
I don't think its something you should take a chance with, how much chocolate will harm a medium size dog, about 20 lbs? I want to convince her to stop this.

Either this woman is lying to you to get a rise out of you, or you should report her to the ASPCA. She should not be allowed to have pets, if she can't care for them properly.

    • Well I know it's bad but I want to know how many people do this too! I think she "knows" it's bad but doesn't believe it,

You can't truly "know" something if you don't believe it.

I think she is ignorant or stubbornly putting all her bets on the feeling in her gut. Proof that intuition isn't always right. A lot of people tend to view dogs as exactly like humans in every way except with fur and on 4 legs. This often leads to wasted effort and even hurting the dog in the end.

Just send her all the links I've put in my comment.

The bottom one includes that quote: "It would take 20 ounces of milk chocolate to kill a 20-pound dog, but only 2 ounces of baker's chocolate or 6 ounces of semisweet chocolate."

Because it's the theobromine that's toxic to dogs, the higher the cocoa content in the chocolate, the more theobromine, the less chocolate required to kill the dog.

And yeah, quite a few people feed their dogs 'human' food - usually because they're unaware of the difference in tolerance. I mean, dogs can eat excrement and raw meat regularly and stay healthy, who'd guess a little bit of chocolate could do them the damage? So it's understandable, but that woman needs to heed all the advice from experts if she doesn't want to hurt her dog :)

Depends on the type of chocolate. The darker it is, the more potent. White chocolate is okay, since cacao butter is being used. In fact, white chocolate isn't even considered as being real chocolate.
