Word pronunciation

A lot of people where I live pronounce picture as " pitcher" like a water pitcher.
I say " pic-ture".
Is the c silent or not ?

I pronounce the C, because you're supposed to.

If you invest in a dictionary, it will give the proper pronunciation of every word. Regional pronunciations are not necessarily correct, but often accepted.

    • It says " pic- ture" is correct but a certain person I know still insists pitcher is acceptable.

That certain person is obviously pretty ignorant, if it wants to argue with a dictionary.

Do you live in Australia? I pronounce it (pick-ture) but sometimes, it does come out as "pitcher".

They may THINK they're pronouncing the 'c', but some accents slur it into the rest of the word. But no, the 'c' is NOT silent.

Oddly is seem to me that it's the T that easily gets lost. When I say it it comes out like pic-chur, or even pic-shur if I'm talking fast.

same as people who say liberry for library... I always though it was because certain combinations of letters are difficult for some people to say. it's almost more like a speech impediment that way. although I've not heard other words containing "ct" said that way as often as i hear "piture", so maybe it's just something they learn or like a dialect.

But depending on where you live many words can be pronounced differently
