It just seems computers are helping a lot of companies save money but putting more work on the employee. I see companies almost eliminating or outsourcing, HR departments and training departments even finance dept's are being eliminated expecting some employees to pick up the extra work getting on their personal computers at home to do the work others used to do. Not to mention if the company is able to down size it's facilities cost such as heat/ac/ water and electric bills. I know a couple warehouse workers that still need to go to work and do their normal job but they are expected to manage their HR benefits on line, read and communicate through email or chat, do training, even track their hours on line and if anything is wrong take care of it on line. I know at least two that either don't own an updated computer or have limited data plans. They spend at least 3 to 5 hours a week doing work stuff without pay I'm sure some are paying for a computer and high speed connections just to do these task. Then I wonder about those actually working from home are they getting compensation for their computer, internet connection, and utilities. What about those that live in an area that high speed connections are not available or limited. If you make 20 dollars an hour but give an extra 5 hrs a week that knocks your pay down about 2.5 dollars an hour. I like the way companies sell this to their people as you can now do it yourself without depending on someone else or without attending a training class. Sure you can eliminate your co workers job and work on your free time, it's a good thing !
I have 4 different companies. Covid-19 has negatively affected all of them, although in different ways. Its likely that overall I lose $ this year.
I do see them bouncing back when Covid-19 recedes.
I do handyman jobs and stuff and if my life was expensive id be in a lot of trouble for how thats been going. Work from home is a real priveledge.
