Working up drumsets

I've always wondered if I should start off with a really expensive drumkit or a cheap 500 dollar one. Right now I have a pearl crystal beat series, (1 rack 2 floor) and i've been thinking about upgrading, but I don't know what to. should I just buy the expensive kit or work my way up to it.

    Well I have a tama swingstar with a snare 2 toms and a floor tom and its fine you should be buying nice cymbals i dont really think toms matter that much to me atleast i have a crash a splash a ride and some hats

    Doesn't it depend on your level and whether you need a better set?
    Some of the best drummers have the simplest sets and make up for it with talent.
