Would this be normal where u live

Im not asking your opinion on whether it is good or bad. But would the following be normal in your area or be considered taboo?

Say you are in a english speaking country and you are delivering something to a business. When you get in there the person that greets you says "finally someone that can speak english" and has a friendly conversation before saying "It's just that we would expect to have to learn their language if we went to their country. These people dont speak a word of english I cant even figure out what they're here for."

I have been told by people that where I live is a openly racist area and I have argued against that because I dont feel that I ever actually witness it. But I am starting to wonder if this type of rhetoric is what others are talking about and they would consider "racist". Because this type of rhetoric is not taboo in the area. It makes me wonder if this would be taboo to say in California.

Not normal 1
Very taboo 3

It's normal and not even racist. If a French person was speaking french he would still have no god damn idea what he wants.

It's about the common courtesy of learning the native language when you immigrated to your new country.

I understand English is a hard language to learn but if you are moving to a country that primarily speaks and writes english you have to expect the natives to be suspicious of people talking in a language they dont understand.

It would only be racist if they spoke english and he still didnt serve them because of their race. It seemed his problem was just in language. Which isnt racist in the slightest, more of just complaining about new citizens that should at least bring a translation book to try to figure out how to get what they want from a buisness.

It's not incumbent on the buisness to provide translations if the buisness is the one speaking the majority language.

You do understand that much of the SW united states was settled by the Spanish long before the English showed up. The actual immigrant native language is Spanish.

Europeans move to America: “this is the land of the free and home of the brave! Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness! Don’t tread on me! Freedom of speech, freedom of expression, innocent until proven guilty, freedom!!!”

Is that a topic that comes up often? I bet you’d be surprised by what people have to say if it did come up. It was illegal nationwide until 1962 and some states had laws against it until 2003, when they were all struck down by the Supreme Court. As of 2017, polling showed that 23% of all Americans agreed with child grooming rapist Roy Moore that homosexual conduct should be illegal. At the time, fresh off being removed from the bench because he refused to obey the law and recognize legal gay marriages following the Obergefell case, Moore was a senate candidate to fill the seat vacated by Jeff Sessions, who had just become attorney general and immediately tried to argue that it should be legal for businesses to fire people for being gay(along with any other form of discrimination based on sexual orientation). Sessions had been appointed to that job by Donald Trump, who had said during his campaign that he would strongly consider nominating Supreme Court justices who would overturn Obergedell. Two months ago, June of 2021, was the first time a poll showed a majority of republicans supported legalized gay marriage.

I lived in San Diego my entire life. There was tons of racism towards Latinos, especially Mexicans, from white people. I don't even think they realize what they are saying is racist half the time.

Ironically, most Latinos I knew had strong family bonds and took great care of their kids. The white people I knew were all tweakers. I guess they were jealous of that and used their skin color to feel superior.

Idk where y'all are getting your stereotypes of California and Californians. This is a heavily populated state with lots of different kinds of people here. Racists, non-racists, kind people, bitter people, etc.

Hit or miss here. But it is a legitimate point, there are a lot of Mexican people in my area who can't speak a lick of English. I think they can at least make an effort. However at the same time I do believe the people that actually hire them treat them poorly. Verbal abuse at least. There is some real racism and it sucks. They are mostly good people despite not speaking English but they have their problems too.

It's normal, and unless you're in the southern west of the United States it's just common courtesy to at least learn the basics.

My time in France was mostly spent learning the language. Why? Because I didn't want to be seen as an "idiot tourist".

Racist? Or languist? I would learn the local tongue if I am spending time in a given place regardless of my skin tone.

When you move to another country, you have to adapt to their way of life... not the other way around.

I learned German before I went to Germany, I studied a bit of history and how life works in Germany and while I may not be an example of a perfect citizen, I don't stand out and have good relations with the people, make money legally and stay on the right side of the law.

As an expat you learn the language, culture and fit in if you want to live a normal life. It's as simple as that. If you can't follow those simple rules, stay in your own damn country!

Yeah this is the kind of thing that “I’m not racist but” people will say and defend. Because it sounds legit on the surface, right? Yeah, of course you should learn the language of the country you move to! We’d learn the language if we went to another country! It’s just common courtesy, or whatever.

I used to work with people who talked like that. Funny thing was, when we had a guy with a thick Russian accent working there, they never said a word about his English. Same with the guy from Virginia, nobody ever complained about him not losing his ridiculous southern accent and getting better at our local dialect, even though he was way harder to understand than any of the immigrants that ever worked there. And, funnily enough, everybody who said stuff like that also said a whole bunch of other stuff that was unquestionably racist.

I bet the same is true of that business where you heard that. If you went in with a thick German accent, they’d be more likely to make a Nazi joke after you left than complain about not being able to understand you because you haven’t learned English to their satisfaction.

To respond to your question directly, I live in a pretty diverse area so I can’t give a blanket answer, but it would be normal to hear that from racist people and pretty much unprecedented from anybody else. I don’t think I’ve ever heard somebody who’s not racist express that kind of thought.
