Would you consider paying $ to have your is it normal questions featured?

Hi, TheManagement here. We're considering adding a new feature to the site to help us pay the bills and wanted to get some feedback from ya'll first.

Getting your question featured would mean that it would be featured on the homepage and other places on the site.

- This means more votes.
- This means more comments.

Payments would be done securely by credit card and maybe also via mobile phone.

We'd love to hear your thoughts on this idea.

Thanks!!

I'd pay $2 to get my question featured. 4
I wouldn't pay for such a service. 65
I wouldn't pay for that, but would pay for something else (Comment) 1
I'd pay $1 to get my question featured. 5
I'd pay $5 to get my question featured. 4
I'd pay $.10 to get my question featured. 8
My questions already get plenty of votes and comments. 12
I'd pay $.50 to get my question featured. 2
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

It's always going to be difficult to generate new revenue streams from an existing site that works well and is, as far as I can see, successful. Charging for existing functionality is likely to drive a lot of people from the site. However, I think you've got exactly the right idea in offering new and enhanced functionality for a premium. The question is what that functionality should be.

Greater flexibility over our postings (such as deletion) may be popular. The ability to see other's replies to our own comments (rather than just our posts) would be really popular, I think, and would allow the lifetime of postings to naturally extend beyond the day or so they're in the first page or two of recent posts. The option to post something only the OP can see (or to send them an email) may also be popular, even though I think it would detract from the purpose of the site. Perhaps an "express" moderation for a premium would be popular also.

It's difficult to know how others feel but I think a monthly subscription in return for premium features would be more popular than a cost per usage. A number of tokens for each type of service could be included in monthly packages, allowing a few tiers of service (i.e. silver and bronze account).

What seems most important to me (and perhaps others) is that the ability to post a certain number of stories/polls per month and the flexibility to answer any or all of them remains as it currently is. The stories, polls, and the comments they generate are more than just the lifeblood of the site - they "are" the site.

Thanks for the thoughts! I've been thinking more about offering a premium package like you're describing (inspired by TotalFark, http://www.fark.com/farq/about.shtml#What_is_TotalFark.3F).

The rough idea at the moment is a $5 per month subscription to "IIN Premium". This subscription gets you:

      - Stories & Polls are fast-tracked for moderation.

      - Cool "Premium" badge next to your username on comments.

      - Ability to PM other IIN users.

      - View and comment on upcoming stories & polls before they're moderated.

      - Email notifications for replies to your comments. And, a place on your profile to view these as well.

      - Access to "IIN Premium" member only chatroom.

Is this something you'd be interested in (everyone please reply with your thoughts)? Can you think of any other features that should be a part of the package?

      Thanks!

That's the kind of thing I was imagining (except those are better ideas than I came up with). I think you've got something for everyone there.

This place already has a kind of "community" feel and lots of those ideas above seem about communication, which generally strengthens a community. I think a chatroom could get "lively" to say the least but that's probably a good thing. Moderation seems to be undertaken with a light touch in posts and plenty of contentious posts remain, which is great - I've never been a fan of censorship, even where it can be justified.

Either way, good luck in whatever model you go with. I really like the site and hope it can retain its character while still being a viable concern.

I like this site a lot and it is a relaxing and fun way to spend time. BUt if a great site like this becomes a scam with a membership and all that, I know that many users will me lost.
I have told a lot of my friends to use this and if charges were added to this site, Im almost positive that they won't use it anymore.
If I was in the position as the owner to this site, I would put advertisements on some pages and maybe a 10 second commercial for every 10 stories or something.
    Hope this helps

I agree with faquarl. Exploiting people's personal neuroses for moneymaking somehow rubs me wrong. I'd rather have subtle advertisements, if it must be.

  • this is not on the topic of money but what is moderation? if posts that are sadistic to animals and include the same violent threat to humans are allowed on but "boring" ones are denied what is the purpose of this moderation? Sadistic posts that would make a decent person gag and that could easily gain a fan base is a dangerous thing. it is so blatant that i had to mention it

We do our best not to censor. Moderation is mostly about keeping things on topic and clear. You'd be surprised how many submissions have absolutely nothing to do with "is it normal?".

I wouldn't mind some advertisements, if IIN requires some money to cover up domain costs etc.

I have a suggestion. The Premium Package idea is good, but here's an alternative suggestion. What about selling Point Packages for extra features?

For example, let's say that the site has Point Packages for sale, and there are 3 Packages($5 package, $10 package, and a $30 package), and each package gives a site user 100 points for each dollar spent.

The Points can be used to access extra features individually for users who don't want a full premium package, and so they can spend their money flexibly. Things like PMing someone can cost like 25 Points, or having a poll approved immediately can cost 50 Points and etc. Hope this idea is helpful.

Some of the users in this site, like me, don't have a credit card or a job to afford paying for a service that could be offered by another site for free. I read some of the above comments and the advertisements idea does'nt sound bad at all. What ever takes to keep the site for free so everybody in IIN can enjoy the services provided by you guys. Adding new features to the site sound great, but not charging for them.

I don't have a credit card to pay for this service so it would kind of be unfair that people's questions get more popular and answered and everyone who hasn't payed for the service gets less people answering or voting =[

One last thought - moderation tends to happen en masse so users revisiting the site are either faced with the same stories as last time, or way too many to read in one go. I know it's probably much easier to moderate like this, so how about having a delay on stories so, although they have been moderated, they are trickle-fed onto the site periodically.

If they were released gradually over the 24 hours (or however long) until the next moderation phase, then everyone revisiting the site would have something new to read each time. It also works for people in other timezones or those who keep unsociable hours. You get the benefit of 24-hour moderation even though your moderator(s) don't have to change their methods at all (or moderate at 4am, even though it'd look as if they were doing exactly that).

It wouldn't work for time-sensitive information like news, but I don't see why it couldn't work for you.

We've thought about this, however I think it's more fair to people to have their submissions put out there as soon as possible and not be artificially delayed. We're constantly trying to improve the rate at which we get to the moderation.

No, everything stays the same as it is today and free. But, there will be new functionality that you can choose to pay for if you want to.

      Comment Hidden ( show )
  • I wouldnt pay but i think it would be a good idea for you to make this idea happen because too many people add stories knowing its normal and just want attention this way the people who really want to know if something is normal or not would gladly pay.

I don't think I'd pay, but I like the idea of having it a possibility to have a question featured. If I had one I wanted featured (which I doubt) I'd definitely pay a couple bucks. SO, long story short. If there's an on going option then yeah but no more than a couple of bucks.

Isn't this some form of counseling, you pay the counselor to give you "professional" advice or certain situations that you believe aren't normal and need help with? Except we're asking a bunch of randoms with no degree and half of them reply some ridiculous crap.

Sorry to double post, but also would that mean you have to have money to spend on a website to be heard on top of everyone, all in all money would be an unfair advantage. If it's featured people wouldn't want to dwindle on the rest of the site because they realize someones paid a bit of money to ask a question and I am sure you wouldn't make the featured section quiet, it would stand out to the rest of the posts making it seem more special.

  • Yes, maybe...
But I'd also want greater control over the comments and polls that ONLY I post; like I want to be able to delete anything that I created. I know we can email you the links, but that's a hassle compared to clicking delete button.

I think personal moderation of questions posted would be a great step.

This site seems to actually give people comfort and closure as opposed to just being something else they have to try to compete in and get comments on, you know?

I go to yahoo answers or youtube to get comments and recognition.

This place is cool for advice. If I ever have a question I'd ask it here to get a general census.
