Would you have a relationship with an android?

In the future, there may be robots that mostly look and act like humans. Their AI will, for the sake of this question, be so advanced they'll be able to feel real emotions and abstract thoughts, including love. They will have unique personalities, including defined genders. So approach this question from the perspective that their artificial brain is more or less capable of doing everything a human's can. Let's assume there's those among them who have no qualms with being involved with a human. They would be fully sexually compatible with humans, so guys wouldn't have to worry about sticking it in only for their penis to get caught in between some moving machine parts (ouch). Their flesh will feel like a human's, but you'll still be able to know somehow that they're androids, so don't overthink it and think someone who only likes humans is getting tricked into getting with androids. Would you be attracted to them physically? Would you be able to have a caring relationship with one, maybe being able to connect to him or her emotionally but not physically? Or does the thought of being with someone who is ultimately a machine disgust you?

I'd have both a relationship and sex, assuming I find one I could love 69
I'd only have sex with them. Wonder if they have...extra features? 40
I'd have a loving relationship, but not sex 3
I'd do neither, that's just be weird, they're not even really human! 44

Imagine walking home and having the android sit at the dinner table with the lights all dim and saying "This isn't working out for me, I think we should see other beings."

What an absolutely fascinating question! Although we may not think it, humans are pretty much machines anyway. Just not ones assembled in labs.

In principle, I'm going to say yes, I'd explore this experience. Although I see all kinds of problems, such as the disconnect between this being your property and an individual in its own right. The temptation to tweak its programming to make it more compatible with you? And, from the android's point of view, would it want to be with a human whose lifespan is limited compared to its own.

Hmm, and I'm guessing it wouldn't pee, so I could leave the toilet seat anywhere I wanted to.

  • Do you really think women would leave this be created? I think not. Unless they get better improved android version of men while we get ours.

  • I would get one of them and try to figure out how they were made and if there was a way to make one of their arms one of mine or legs etc. What would be even more interesting is to find out how they would keep their skin looking the same age (if they can keep it that way).
I would most likely be experimenting with it.

For some reason I feel like I would only be able to truly love them if I didn't know that they were an android. It is a very interesting proposition though.

I'd have zero interest in this, but I'm a woman so maybe that's why....

I'll be perfectly honest, it seems extremely loser-ish to me, like you'd want a machine because you can't get-or keep-a real woman. Like a prostitute that you don't have to pay! And you can be a nasty fat slob with no job but it's OK!

YES, I noted that you said it's "brain" would be more or less like a humans, BUT I think most guys who answer this are not even thinking about that, they're just thinking of a sex toy. In fact, I don't THINK, I KNOW.

Edit: Even if guys did consider the whole "human brain" aspect, I guarantee they're just thinking, "well, I can re-program it"....

Many women already do have a relationship with "androids", its called a dildo!

    • They wouldn't be like a prostitute you didn't have to pay, unless they chose to be. They would be no more likely to be sluts than humans. They would notice if you were a nasty fat slob and have their own standards for attractiveness, they're not blind. They have their own desires and wills. Due to the complexity of their minds, with each aspect of it depending every other, even an android that was conditioned to be a sexbot may change after being exposed to the world, and regardless still wouldn't take kindly to being raped any more than a human slut would. Because the android brain fundamentally relies on environmental considerations and new behavior over time, much like a human's, anything designed strictly as a sexbot would also be essentially retarded. Trying to reprogram an android to be a sexbot would basically ruin it, as its brain model simply doesn't allow for that without the way it works being changed on the most fundamental level. That would be the only way to ensure it would stay in that role.

Yeah, I realize what you're saying, but when guys are answering this, they're just thinking about the sex part and about re-progrmming it. I'm sorry, but it's true....

I think it's got great potential. I already talk to Siri and try to get her to talk dirty to me. If Siri was real I'd probably want to have sex with her, cos she sounds hot, so extrapolate that to an Android that looks like a real human being.

It has possibilities. And if you get sick of her just update the software or install a new pussy.

Although i like the idea, i would only be friends with a robot and no more. Humans are irrational and impulsive which is more arousing. Guys might not always say the right things or do the things you'd like them to do but nothing compares to em :)

A relationship is a two way thing, it's a co=operation. An android wouldn't be capable of true emotion, and would only duplicate it, so it wouldn't be a relationship in the first place.

And sex is a co-operation too, it's an act between two living organisms. Since an android isn't a living organism, it isn't really sex, it's more like masturbating.

So no, I don't think I'd gain anything from the experience. I'd rather be with a real person.

    • "An android wouldn't be capable of true emotion, and would only duplicate it"

That's essentially what human brains do too. A human brain isn't much different from an extremely advanced computer, taking a list of variables then making a response based on that. It may not be fully understood, but it's ultimately mechanical in the way it operates. There's no reason that, in the future, sufficiently advanced technology won't be able to exactly recreate the processes of the brain. The only difference between the brain and this hypothetical future computer is that the brain is made of organic material. The only reason a human would disagree with the reality of what an artificial brain is feeling is because they want to feel special, even when there's no reason for them to. And if you don't think androids feel anything, then you could tell one to their face.

And it would be easy for an android to fake emotions. In humans, sociopaths and psychopaths are literally incapable of some emotions. They don't feel love/believe it exists, they feel no regret, remorse or empathy. But they're capable of faking these emotions. You've probably met a few sociopaths in your life who you believed were regular people. So androids can be capable of this too. You can't programme something to "feel", but you can programme something to fake these feelings by expressing them verbally or thought body language.

If the human thought process was as straight forward as computers, there'd be no need for the psychology. The problems would all be "technical.."

      • Uzzie101

But the human brain isn't a computer. It's more imaginative, and each one process information slightly differently. Some of them are angrier than others, some are more romantic, androids have artificial emotions. We create ours naturally as the brain is like a natural computer. Androids can duplicate what they've been told to do/learn

I have an open mind about it. I'd try it out.

    Can they also marry?

If I kill it would it just be considered manslaughter?

    • "Can they also marry?"

Considering how the whole point of marriage is to get people to reproduce, probably not. Although androids do have unique appearances and traits, the project to allow female androids to reproduce with a human's sperm by extracting data from it and combining it with the android's own traits was blocked on religious grounds, with the Vatican releasing a statement saying any result from something like that would be an abomination. The androids are capable of being in a monogamous relationship anyway and, like humans, don't necessarily need a marriage to confirm that they care for each other.

"If I kill it would it just be considered manslaughter?"

The ethics of whether an android can be mistreated are hotly debated, and the stance varies depending on where you are. Some popular religious branches hold that androids have no souls and no favor in the eyes of God, which has caused some places to think mistreating an android is no worse than mistreating any other unfeeling machine. However, this conclusion is not accepted everywhere and some jurisdictions have even officially stated that sufficiently intelligent machines with the capacity to feel emotion have the same rights as humans. And of course, doing something to an android might cause others to try to find a way to get back at you in court. Citizens are advised to check local laws before committing potential crimes against androids.

It certainly amazes me how detailed and quite seemingly accurate your speculations seem.

Though marriage these days are just for reproducing like it used to be. There are financial advantages to being married in todays world which is where my question was aiming at.

Also, I'm sure androids are susceptible to such violence towards them but would it be as dire as if it were human? I suppose each country would have it's own laws prohibiting such crimes towards androids. I am just not sure if finding a way to deactivate such a machine would mean a more definite action by courts.
