Would you kill someone who was trying to kill your pet?

Say it was the only way to stop them.

No, for another reason. 3
I don’t know. I can’t really know unless I was in that situation. 6
No. No matter what, all people matter more than animals. 5
Yes, I would. 29
I don’t think so. I doubt I would have the guts to actually kill someone. 5

Neither of them died though, I drove them to the hospital both times

Even if you don't care much for animals I think you would still be foolish not to take this very seriously. If someone is prepared to kill someone's pet then what does that say about them? They're clearly fucked up inside and enjoy violence. They lack empathy. People like that are scary and usually end up moving on to abusing and killing people.

I am not sold on the idea that insanity exists, therefore they should be put to death.

I have never been able to understand that point of view. It just really tells me that I have nothing in common with people who think like that! The only people who automatically come before my cat are my elderly parents.

I used to know this awful little woman who would routinely get jealous of other people's pets, even their children. She actually had the nerve to ask some stupid hypothetical question about what would I do if I was in a burning building, save my cat, or save her. I'm glad that I haven't had anything to do with her in eight years. She was even jealous of this mutual friend of ours spending money to pay for one of her adult children's weddings, and being able to afford to pay her beagle's vet bills, because the friend doesn't always want to go out to eat at restaurants with her.

Nope, she didn't have any pets, or kids. Believe it, or not she was 50 years old at the time I knew her about eight years ago. She could be quite needy at times, liked to gossip, and was oftentimes kinda two-faced. I think she was abused, neglected a lot as a child. Sometimes I get a little curious as to how she is, but not curious enough to attempt to contact her, because I prefer my own peace of mind.

Thanks so much for your response. It's so funny that you use the phrase, "throw em under the bus", because she would always ask these stupid hypothetical questions, and then if I didn't choose her, or simply didn't answer her she would accuse me of, "throwing her under the bus", I can't tell you how much she would piss me off with her needy, entitled bullshit.

I think that you ought to go the extra mile here, and ask the critical question, "why would someone try to kill another person's pet"?

My cat is very gentle, docile and anyone who would want to hurt him is probably going to try to hurt me, and not deserving of mercy. I think it's normal to use deadly force to protect one's property. I don't know what the law is here in this tiny, little first state, but I grew up in Texas, and in Texas it's legal, and very normal for people to protect their property with deadly force.

I'm an American, but by the grace of God I was born a Southerner, and raised in the State of Texas. I firmly believe that people should have the right to defend their property with deadly force! I personally see my cat as more like a child, but legally my feline companion is my property, and I believe that he deserves to be loved, and protected by means of deadly force if that should ever be necessary.

My animal companion is well trained, very gentle, and docile. Why on Earth would anyone want to harm, or kill my cat? I think it would be safe for me to assume that that anyone who meant to harm my cat most definitely means to do grave bodily harm unto me as well. I would not hesitate to defend my companion animal as well as my sister's with deadly force!

I really don't like this question for two reasons.

First off, everyone says they would no problem but if it actually happened, I feel like most people would not kill another human being over this. Killing someone fucks you up mentally and it takes a certain mental fortitude to just do it on a whim like that. So everyone that says they would, I don't even believe them.

Secondly, context would matter too much. Like what do you know about the killer? Is it a guaranteed kill? What is your pet, a dog you spend a ton of time with and have had for years or one of 20 goldfish you have that are the size of a nickel? Too many variables.

Why would anyone want to kill someone's pets?

I'm not specifically referring to goldfish, but there are people who pay very large sums of money for koi fish, which are technically a type of goldfish. Regardless, I think people should have the right to protect their property with deadly force! I don't have a problem with a person who shoots someone dead for trying to steal their car, or truck. I don't think it's okay for people to rob others and destroy their property.

It depends on the jurisdiction. In some places it is legal for a person to defend their property with deadly force. While we were living in the Houston area my dad knew a guy who found someone in his garage attempting to steal his lawnmower, the guy pours gasoline on the perpetrator and threatened to light him on fire with a cigarette lighter if he tries to escape. He managed to hold the thief like that, whilst his son called 911, the police arrived to arrest the perpetrator, and the guy didn't get into any trouble whatsoever! This happened in the 1980s.
