I didn't finish school or go to college.
I didn't get to release my full potential.
Apparently i was a promising individual.
But then they say that to all the special kids right?
Definitely NO. I never would have got my current job if i hadn't gone to college and it is an excellent job too.
*your experience may differ.
No, but I do think that it is too often seen as a ticket to a better job rather than as an education and means of developing the necessary SKILLS to get said job. I think that's partly why so many college kids get smacked in the face by reality when they graduate because they realize that you can't always just wave a degree at an employer and think that's enough to get the job, period
But aside from that, no, I do not think it's overrated. Utilized with the wrong mindset, yes, many times, but not overrated.
Overrated, no, even though most of what I learned at college I won't use in my career, it is useful in my everyday life. Not to mention all the fun you will have in college, friends you'll make, and lovers you may end up marrying.
'Pointless' and overpriced, yes, since most jobs require you to have a degree but then teach you all the necessary skills you need to fulfill your duties.
College is what you make of it. If you stay drunk and only go to class every other week you are not going to get anything out of it. But, if you open your mind and try new things, new ways of thinking, you can be successful. Internships, campus events, social gatherings, and the ability to work with other bright minded individuals are a few of the perks of attending college. But in the end, you need to have a PLAN. Do not go to college just to get a degree. Go to gain skills and have experience for this job market.
For most majors, yes. College is basically a business. All they want is for their applicants to have a high GPA so they can look good compared to other colleges and they want your money. They make you take useless liberal arts courses that you have no use for in the future, unless someone becomes a liberal arts teacher (good luck finding a job in that). I'm currently a junior and pretty much mapped out my future and I can definitely say that at least 90% of the courses I already took will not help me in my future career. Only MOST of my my major courses will be useful. Unfortunately, most employers for good paying jobs require a bachelor's degree. Ever wonder why a Business Administration major at Rutgers needs to take one semester of Calculus? Simple, they want your money.
I think it depends on where you go. Some colleges are better than others.
I went for computer science, and yes I did get my degree, but I still don't understand why they insisted on each student taking those 1 credit classes like "walking", "biking" all this stuff we learn as kids. One of my professors said it's the only way the college can keep classes full, and avoid cutting teaching jobs. I think he's right about that. Big waste of a students time.
College is definitely not overrated. Unless you "graduate" from an online school.
it is pricy, but i love college. it got me out of my house and i found good friends. I also have awesome profesors who treat me like their family. Very wise and kind and super encouraging. I could never imagine not being here. the experience to me is woorth more than the money im payimg alone.
:)
Right now in this economic downturn it may be difficult getting a job no matter how many degrees you have.
The government will fix it by raising taxes...brilliant!
