What should be done about fathers that abandon their kids?

I notice that seems to be happening a lot these days in my area. The kids grow up with one parent and become adults that are mentally ill trouble makers.

I'm aware that mothers do the same thing and they're just as scummy as the fathers. It's the male gender that seems to enjoy dodging their responsibility more. So what should be done about deadbeat parents?

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

I'm fully well aware that this opinion isn't going to be popular with most on this site; but why shouldn't I provide my honest opinion?

If women are going to get prison sentences for abortion then fathers should get prison sentences for willingly opting out of parenthood. Obviously this would vary state by state.

I'm generally pro-choice but fair is fair. Either neither should be able to opt out or both. Not one or the other. (If abortion is legal, child support should not be a requirement.)

      I 100% agree.

Women you cannot have it both ways. If you can make the ultimate choice for a human life than why cant the guy decide he wants to void his parental responsibility?

If abortion is restricted than 100% yes the guy should be on the hook for it too.

      I support true gender equality.

Technically speaking, abortion is worse than leaving one's family, so it would deserve a greater prison sentence. Both deserve prison sentences, though.

(Apologies for the bit of a ramble. This isn't intended to come off as snarky.)

        As previously mentioned, I'm generally
pro-choice. But, I'm pro-choice with most issues we face today. Drugs, vaccinations, guns, taxes, gender reassignment surgery, gay marriage, abortion...I think a person should have the right to do what they want with their money and their bodies. There's arguements to be made for and against all of these topics. All of which with different outlooks based on religion, the value of life, human psychology, traditional morality, or even more modern morality. I'm not here to convince anyone; I can't. But I just want genuine equality.

I'm just about fairness in the legal system. These laws shouldn't be putting some people in control of their lives while stripping control away from others. Choices are at the core of all of these issues.

Should people be able to CHOOSE to get vaccinated? Should people be able to CHOOSE to own a gun? Should people be able to CHOOSE to do drugs? Should people be able to CHOOSE to pay for sex? Should people be able to CHOOSE to practice their religion? So on and so forth - you get the point.

The autonomy of one's body and mind is of great importance to me. It is something I believe everyone has the right to; regardless of what the issue is.

From my understanding, the moral struggle with abortion is specifically around some people considering life to begin at various stages. Some believe it to be at conception, some believe it to be at the first heart beats, and others at later points.

I see it as being a baby once it roughly starts to look like one. (The 9 to 10 week mark.)

"I see it as being a baby once it roughly starts to look like one. (The 9 to 10 week mark.)"

The problem with that is that you're basing what is human and what is not human on mere appearances. Appearance does not make a person a person. One does not have to look like a person to be a person, so long as one is a person. If someone were so horrifically deformed, for example, that they did not look like a human, they would still be a human, no matter how inhuman they look.

I guess if women get to choose whether or not to have an abortion it just seems fair that the guy has the option of just walking away from his responsibilities as well.

Yeah but we have become civilized and created values because of our brains. We can objectively see the best value system for civilization to flourish. And 2 parent house holds we figured out thousands of years ago were the best thing for society.

If they have neglected responsibility and be proven before court to have no sufficient enough reason for doing so other than they’re lazy, commitment phobic, self serving or irresponsible, then I think they should be sentenced to mandatory parental tutoring with a trained professional or a group of buff nanny’s that will whip their slackass into line. They then should be castrated and desexed and left out in a forest for a few nights without radio contact

Haha, ever since I turned 36 I always keep a back window open in case a 16 year old knocks on my front door
        “Dad...?”

          Oh great, good for you.

But how about we stay on topic?

The Four Tops wrote a lovely song about this problem all the way back in the seventies. They saw the problem right as it was starting, and responded:

Are you talking about willingly abandoning their kids?
I'd say those leaving on their own will is a small number.
You know why fathers leave today? It is much harder to get financial benefits from the government if a father is in the picture. Oh, and if a man marries a disabled woman on SSI and makes over a certain income or has assets, the government stops paying her benefits.

Why would the dad stay when he could live at his mom's house down the road and his "single" girlfriend gets food stamps, Medicaid, rent assistance, water and electric assistance, daycare assistance, and WIC. Not to mention, there may he bigger tax rewards for single moms.

The government pays single moms so why does dad need to be in the picture?

Hard to say really but I genuienly believe a man can never love in the same unconditional way a woman can. I just don't think it's in them and I think very few men genuienly want kids because they'd love them and want to give them the best possible life. It seems to me most men want a wife and kids for the image - It looks good, makes him feel accomplished in life and he can make sure his genes live on (as if that would be something the world needs...). I doubt much can be done about it. Free will is a thing after all and in the end it wouldn't be much better to grow up with a distant unloving father. Better let the ass leave and hopefully the mom can eventually meet a decent new man instead.

Apes are also animals that dont yet have the ability to not kill anyone that isnt original to their family unit.

Apes are also strong enough to often not need massive cooperation. Humans were were weak af surrounded by preditors. If you weren't cooperative you were much more likely to get ambushed.

Alot of these cases are woken abandoning the fathers. I know one guy who does really well for himself fighting for custody of his kids. It's not going well for him. The mom makes 4 some grand a month off them plus child support from his check. Where as he just wants to give then a good life. He has one kid now thar she abandoned. (Kid has some issues)

I think it's mostly because of culture. There's much poorer countries with more problems that dont have as much of a issue with fathers going A-Wol. Its seen as acceptable here and it shouldnt be.
